Minister Byrne Announces Appointment of Interim Chief Review Commissioner

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Immigration, Skills and Labour, today announced the appointment of Suzanne Hollett as interim Chief Review Commissioner of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Division (WHSCRD), effective January 1, 2021.

The current Chief Review Commissioner, Marlene Hickey, is retiring and the interim appointment will ensure WHSCRD continues its work pending the recruitment of suitable candidates for the role and a final recommendation through the Independent Appointments Commission.

WHSCRD reviews final decisions of WorkplaceNL to ensure compliance with the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act and Regulations and is mandated to direct appropriate remedies where necessary. WHSCRD is separate and independent from WorkplaceNL.

The Independent Appointments Commission was established to create a merit-based process for appointments to agencies, boards and commissions to make certain the process for appointing individuals to agencies, boards and commissions is open and transparent.

Individuals from all regions of the province are encouraged to put their names forward through the Independent Appointments Commission process for consideration for future appointment opportunities. Applications are available at www.iacnl.ca.

BACKGROUNDER

Biographical Information for Suzanne Hollett

Suzanne Hollett graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Laws in 2003. After several years in private practice, she joined the public service of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2008 as an analyst with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. In this role, Ms. Hollett reviewed decisions of public bodies to ensure compliance with the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Personal Health Information Act. She subsequently worked with Nalcor as a Privacy Officer, until January 2019 when she was appointed a Review Commissioner with the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Division. Ms. Hollett has a broad range of experience in legal analysis/interpretation, dispute resolution, oversight of legislative compliance and administrative decision-making/adjudication. She also holds a Certificate in Adjudication for Administrative Agencies, Boards and Tribunals through Osgoode Hall, York University.
