The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Justice and Public Safety:

Mr. Speaker, it is my privilege to recognize in this honourable house the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s support dog Stella.

I am sure many of you have already seen Stella the Portuguese Water Dog around the community since she was first introduced in July. While she is still in training, soon Stella will be working across various areas of the justice system.

Stella is learning skills to detect and support persons in need. She will work with victims and survivors of violence and those struggling with a mental illness, provide reassurance to calm witnesses testifying during court procedures, and help those who simply require some comfort during difficult times – including her fellow officers of the RNC.

Mr. Speaker, I need to recognize Stella’s handler, Cst. Krista Fagan and trainer, retired RNC Staff Sergeant, Mike Adams, for their work in preparing Stella for this important role. You may have noticed through Stella’s social media account that she has been visiting organizations and workplaces across the province including in Labrador and most recently in Corner Brook. I had the chance to meet Stella yesterday and she is a welcomed addition to the team.

Mr. Speaker, I want to thank all of the people who made this program possible and I ask all honourable members to join me in welcoming Stella to the RNC and our community.

Thank you.
