Service NL announced today that a Cartwright company, Cloud 9 Salmon Lodge Inc., and a supervisor have been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. The charges arise from an incident, which occurred on July 12, 2018 involving an employee of that outfitter. The employee was operating a boat that capsized while on the Eagle River in Labrador. The employee remains missing, while the two other occupants of the boat were rescued. The investigation was conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety branch of Service NL.
The employer has been charged with six counts that allege generally that it failed:
- To ensure the safety of its workers;
- To provide the necessary information, instruction, training and supervision to its workers;
- To ensure that persons not in his employ were not exposed to hazards;
- To ensure that the necessary protective clothing and devices were used;
- To ensure that safe work procedures were followed; and,
- To ensure that written rescue and evacuation procedures were developed for work on water.
The supervisor has been charged with one count alleging that he failed to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all workers under his supervision.
The first appearance is scheduled for July 15, 2020 at Provincial Court in Port Hope Simpson, Labrador.
