Public Advisory: Updated Provided on Bridge Repairs on Avalon Peninsula

  • Transportation and Infrastructure

September 25, 2020

Work to repair a bridge in the eastbound lanes of the Outer Ring Road over Team Gushue Highway will begin Monday, September 28.

Work includes repairs to concrete and expansion joints and paving. The department anticipates this work being completed in October. The route will be reduced to one lane at this location. Motorists should anticipate some traffic delays and consider using alternate routes.

Meanwhile, construction sites at four bridges on the Avalon Peninsula are reopening to two lanes. Speed limits at each location will remain at 50 km/h until work is completed in October:

  • The bridge on the eastbound Trans-Canada Highway approximately four kilometres east of the Foxtrap Access Road has reopened to two lanes.
  • The bridge on the eastbound Pitts Memorial Drive between the highway’s interchange with the Robert E. Howlett Highway and the overpass above Bay Bulls Road has reopened to two lanes.
  • The bridge on the westbound Pitts Memorial Drive between the highway’s interchange with the Robert E. Howlett Highway and the overpass above Bay Bulls Road is expected to reopen to two lanes in early October.
  • The bridge on the eastbound Pitts Memorial Drive over Robert E Howlett Highway is also expected to reopen to two lanes in early October.

Work at each site included repairs to concrete and expansion joints.

The contractor has notified the department that due to their shortage of the type of liquid asphalt needed to pave the bridges, paving will be completed in mid-October.

Details on all construction on provincial highways where motorists can expect traffic delays is available at nl511.ca and the 511 smartphone app.
