The Honourable John G. Abbott, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, was in Stephenville today to announce the opening of applications for the 2021-22 Accessible Taxi Grant. This grant demonstrates the Provincial Government’s commitment to create inclusive, accessible communities where all people have equitable opportunities to work, socialize, and participate in activities.

Budget 2021 invests $50,000 in the Accessible Taxi Grant, which is delivered through the Department’s Disability Policy Office. Grants of up to a maximum of $25,000 are awarded to eligible individuals, companies and agencies that are able to deliver accessible taxi services within Newfoundland and Labrador.

These grants assist with costs of retrofitting a passenger vehicle to meet accessibility standards or assist with the purchase of a new vehicle, which can accommodate passengers with mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and scooters. The accessible taxi service must give priority to persons with disabilities, but may provide taxi services to all customers.

In 2020-21, the department awarded an Accessible Taxi Grant in the amount of $25,000 to Blue Bird Cab Limited. This taxi business, which provides services in the Stephenville area, will be able to expand services to meet demand for accessible transportation over a larger geographical area.

To obtain a copy of the guidelines and application before the deadline of September 24, 2021, please visit the department’s website at Accessible Taxi Program ; email DPOgrants@gov.nl.ca; call toll-free 1-888-729-6279; or text 709-725-4463. Video Relay Service calls are also welcome and applications are available in alternate formats.

Quotes
“Accessible transportation opens up a world of possibilities for individuals who use mobility devices. The Accessible Taxi Grant provides persons using such devices as wheelchairs and scooters the same choices available to others who wish to hire a taxi to travel to work, appointments, recreation or leisure activities. I am pleased to open the grant for applications and I encourage interested parties to visit the department’s website or connect with the Department’s Disability Policy Office to obtain an application.”
