The Provincial Government is recognizing the United Nations’ International Day for the Eradication of Poverty which takes place on Sunday, October 17.

Since 1993, the United Nations has been observing October 17 as the day to acknowledge the challenges experienced by persons living in poverty and promote global awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution.

This year’s theme is “Building Forward Together,” with a focus on redesigning post-COVID-19 approaches to poverty reduction to place people living in poverty at the forefront of decisions and processes that affect their lives.

The Provincial Government remains committed to preventing, reducing and alleviating poverty by empowering and supporting people across the lifespan. The Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development, in discussion with community partners, has been working toward a renewed approach to poverty reduction, which will include collaboration with community groups, individuals with lived experience of poverty and the public.

As the new approach is developed, Budget 2021 continues to invest in a wide range of programs to support people living in poverty. Some of these programs include increased benefits under the Mother Baby Nutrition Supplement, benefits for seniors and persons with disabilities, affordable housing, transportation and support for children’s health and education.

Quote
“To address the overall well-being of people during these challenging times, economic recovery must be considered together with poverty reduction. On the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we must all renew our commitment to work together to build strong and resilient communities. We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the Federal Government, local governments, community partners, people with lived experience of poverty and the broader community to reduce poverty and create a fully inclusive province.”
Honourable John G. Abbott
Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development
