Public Advisory: Tips for Safe, Smart Shopping this Holiday Season

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and consumers are encouraged to be aware and informed before making purchases whether they be in-person or online.

Purchasing policies vary widely from store to store. Shoppers are advised to inquire about or refer to the seller’s refund, exchange or re-stocking fee policy before buying. While many retailers prefer to keep their customers happy, no legal obligation exists for businesses to accept returned items unless they are defective or not sold as an ‘all sales are final’ contract or clearance item.

With many shoppers turning to the convenience of online shopping, consumers should use caution when sharing personal information. Consumers should also ensure the online retailer is legitimate, is security enabled and provides a safe payment option. Look for the “https” in the URL (the extra s is for “secure”) and a small lock icon on the address bar.

The holidays are also about charitable giving, and consumers should take caution when making donations. If a consumer is unsure of the intentions of the organization seeking donation, reach out to the charity directly for information, or research online to confirm the charity is reputable and in good standing.
