Today, the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, along with Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, announced approximately $81,800 in cost-shared funding to support the Town of Port Saunders Energy-Efficiency and Fuel Switching Project. The project enables the town to replace the oil furnace with an electrical heat pump system at the town council office.

The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes annually. It is one of 13 climate change projects in Newfoundland and Labrador recently announced under the Climate Change Challenge Fund. The Provincial Government is contributing $37,200 and the Federal Government is providing $44,600 toward the project. The Town of Port Saunders is also contributing approximately $29,000.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Climate Change Challenge Fund is a competitive grant-based program to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects. The fund supports capital projects that lower greenhouse gas emissions and was available to organizations across commercial, municipal, not-for-profit sectors and, Indigenous governments and organizations.

The province’s Climate Change Challenge Fund will receive up to $19.9 million through the federal Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund, an increase of $8.5 million in response to strong interest from organizations.
