The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, today announced that applications are now available for rebates under the new Oil to Electric Rebate Program.

As announced in Budget 2021, the Provincial Government has allocated $1 million for the program to provide a rebate of up to $2,500 for homeowners to transition from oil to electricity. To be eligible a homeowner must have consumed at least 1,000 litres of heating fuel oil in the past 12 months and the homeowner must remove the existing oil tank from the property. The program will be administered by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.

Eligible applicants must also be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador and registered as a titleholder of a residential dwelling in the Provincial Government’s Registry of Deeds. The dwelling must be connected on the island interconnected grid or Labrador interconnected electrical grid, and the dwelling must be existing and used year-round.

Full program criteria and applications are available from Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. The program is retroactive to Budget Day, May 31, 2021 and processed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The new Oil to Electric Rebate Program builds on other green initiatives supported by the Provincial Government including the Energy Efficiency in Oil Heated Homes Program and the Home Energy Savings Program.

Quote
“The new Oil to Electric Rebate Program builds on our commitment to improve energy efficiency and fuel switching by converting homes from oil heat to electric heat. This rebate of up to $2,500 will help residents towards their home retrofit, contributing to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.”
