Minister Osborne Welcomes Students to a New School Year

September 8, 2021

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Education, is today welcoming students in both the K-12 and post-secondary education systems back to school.

In light of the current status of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador, and in line with the province’s “Together. Again,” reopening plan, the majority of students in the K-12 education system are returning to classes in the low-risk designation, with in-person classes and public health measures aligned with low-risk of transmission.

Based on the recommendations of public health, Cloud River Academy in Roddickton, H.G. Fillier Academy in Englee and Mary Simms All Grade in Main Brook will see delayed openings, with students returning to class on September 14 under high-risk scenario measures, including:

  • Mask-wearing in classrooms, buses, hallways and other common areas;
  • Temporary suspension of field trips and extracurricular activities;
  • Virtual gatherings instead of in-person;
  • No community use of schools; and
  • Enhanced cleaning measures.

Full details of the Back to School Plan for the NLESD and the CSFP can be found here.

Public and private post-secondary training institutions have undertaken significant work to prepare for the safe delivery of programming, working closely with public health officials as they put together their plans to return to campus this fall. Memorial University’s return to campus plans are available here. College of North Atlantic updates and notices can be found here. Students of private training institutions should contact their campus administration for fall semester details.

Quote
“The first day of school in K-12 and the first day of fall semester in post-secondary are always days of great anticipation and excitement, but I know that this year more than ever those days have taken on added meaning. As we look toward a year where classrooms are more familiar, we must not take this opportunity for granted. The value of in-person education is clearer than ever, and we must all take the necessary steps to reduce risk of COVID-19 in our communities. By continuing to work together, we can help ensure a positive school experience for everyone.”
