As part of International Literacy Day, the Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Education are extending congratulations to Ashley King, recipient of the 2021 Council of the Federation Literacy Award for Newfoundland and Labrador. Premier Furey and Minister Osborne presented the award to Ms. King at Confederation Building earlier today.

In 2018, Ms. King made the life-changing decision to return to school to obtain her high school diploma, with the goal of having a career and being a positive role model for her young children. Her positive attitude, hard work and determination to succeed have allowed her to improve her literacy skills. Ms. King achieved her high school equivalency diploma in June 2021, and is now pursuing her post-secondary credentials in Executive Office Management at College of the North Atlantic.

The Council of the Federation Literacy Award celebrates the valuable contributions made by Canadians in the field of literacy, as well as adult learners who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to literacy. The award is presented each year to learners, educators, volunteers, community organizations, and businesses in each province and territory.

Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. The Provincial Government released a five-year Adult Literacy Action Plan in 2019 to help adult Newfoundlanders and Labradorians gain the literacy skills needed to lead healthier, more productive lives and to fully participate in the province’s economy.
