Public Advisory: Impending Weather and Candidate Nomination Deadline

  • Office of the Chief Electoral Officer

January 20, 2021

Elections NL is encouraging potential candidates to file their nomination papers as soon as possible. The Avalon Peninsula is expecting blizzard-like conditions on Thursday, January 21 into Friday, January 22, with another smaller system expected to follow on Saturday. This has the potential to cause travel delays, district office closures or delayed openings.

The nomination deadline of this Saturday, January 23 at 2:00 p.m. is fixed in legislation and cannot be changed. If candidates do not file their papers by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with their district Returning Officer, they will not be nominated and their names will not appear on the election ballot.

Potential candidates may call Elections NL at 1-877-729-7987 or visit www.elections.gov.nl.ca to find their district Returning Offices’ locations and office hours.
