The Provincial Government is providing $35,000 to Food First NL to support improved access to healthy, local, sustainable food in schools and health care facilities.

Food First NL will use this supplementary funding to continue its work to build capacity for institutional food programming as well as to further develop the recently re-launched online resource centre, the Community Food Action Space.

This funding builds on more than $600,000 provided to Food First NL by the Provincial Government since 2019, much of which was used to provide resources to community food programs around the province during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Provincial Government will continue to partner with Food First NL and other organizations to support increased access to healthy food.

Quotes
“Government and community groups are continuing to work together to improve access to healthy food, particularly for the most vulnerable people in the province. By partnering with community organizations such as Food First NL, we are providing funds and support to improve the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”
Honourable Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“Improved access to healthy food in our province is vital to helping our residents live healthy and well. We are very pleased to provide additional funds to Food First NL, who work with the Vulnerable Population Task Group and many community partners to improve access to healthy food province-wide.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services

“Food First NL continues to be a valued community partner in helping to advance food security in our province. Their Community Food Action Space is a prime example of how our communities grow stronger when we all work together.”
Honourable John G. Abbott
Minister of Children Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Community Sector

“We see so many opportunities for health care facilities, schools, and other institutions to be leaders in our food system. Better institutional food means better outcomes for patients, students, and communities, and institutional procurement has the potential to be a huge support for local production. This will help get us there.”
