Provincial Government Welcomes Decision to Ease Border Restrictions

  • Executive Council

July 20, 2021

The Provincial Government is welcoming the Federal Government’s decision to ease border restrictions, which will permit fully-vaccinated travelers from Saint Pierre et Miquelon and the United States to enter the province. This builds on the progress that is being made as Canada emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic and is aligned with Newfoundland and Labrador’s re-opening plan – Together.Again.

The adjusted border measures for travelers from Saint Pierre et Miquelon and the United States will come into effect on August 9. Fully vaccinated travelers from other countries will be allowed access to Canada as of September 7, assuming that the domestic epidemiologic situation remains favourable in Canada. All travelers will still require a pre-entry COVID-19 molecular test result.

The entry points for travelers from St. Pierre et Miquelon are through Fortune via ferry and through Halifax via plane.

Full information on the Federal Government’s easing of border restrictions can be found here.

Quotes
“The easing of travel restrictions for our neighbours from Saint Pierre et Miquelon and the United States comes with great excitement – friends and families will be ‘Together. Again.’ and new visitors will be able to safely travel and explore our communities inviting new opportunities for tourism operators and small businesses. Our government has advocated for the re-opening to Saint Pierre et Miquelon given the close ties between us. It is a time for optimism as we emerge from COVID-19, thanks to the commitment of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to get vaccinated and follow public health advice. Let’s keep up the great work.”
Honourable Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“I am pleased to see the Federal Government easing restrictions for Saint Pierre et Miquelon and the United States on August 9 for fully-vaccinated travelers. As one of the main ports of entry into Newfoundland and Labrador, the community of Fortune in my District of Burin – Grand Bank has much history and connection with Saint Pierre et Miquelon and I look forward to welcoming our families and friends back to our province.”
