Public Advisory: Public Encouraged to Watch the Forest Fire Hazard Index

  • Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture

July 5, 2021

The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is asking the general public to check the provincial Forest Fire Hazard Index Forecast Map when planning outdoor fires on forest land, which includes growing or standing trees, shrubs, dry marsh, bogs and land commonly known as barrens.

Open or outdoor fires within 300 meters of forest land are not permitted where the forest fire hazard index is very high or extreme on the Forest Fire Hazard Index map. This includes backyard fires in outdoor wood burning units (including fire pits), campfires, bonfires, beach fires, and boil-ups. The use of propane barbeques, and propane fueled fire units is permitted.

A permit to burn issued by the department is required for open fires to burn grass, brush and other waste materials during forest fire season. However, permits are deemed invalid in areas where the forest fire hazard index rating is high, very high or extreme.

If you are unsure as to whether outdoor fires are permitted please contact the Forest Management District Office located in the area where the fire is planned.

Individuals should also check with local municipalities or fire departments to determine if burning activity is permitted within municipal boundaries.

To report a forest fire call 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).
