Board Members Appointed for Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation

Four new appointments to the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC) board of directors were announced today by the Provincial Government.

Janis Byrne, Kevin Dumaresque, Kendra MacDonald and Lynn Zurel have been appointed as members of the board of directors for three-year terms, effective immediately.

Biographies for each appointee can be found in the backgrounder below. All four were appointed based on recommendations from the Independent Appointments Commission.

BACKGROUNDER

Biographies of the Appointed Members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation Board of Directors

Janis C. Byrne Q.C.
Janis Byrne is the executive vice president – legal with Pennecon Limited. Prior to joining Pennecon in 1999, Ms. Byrne worked in private practice with the law firm Poole Althouse in Corner Brook.

Ms. Byrne has served on numerous boards, with over 25 years of experience in the governance of non-profit and for profit boards. She currently sits as director and chair of the people and culture committee, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, and director of the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. She is a recent past chair of the St. John’s Board of Trade, and a past president of the Canadian Bar Association (NL).

A graduate of Memorial University, Ms. Byrne also holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor and a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Ottawa. She received the Institute of Corporate Directors designation in 2017, and was appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 2020.

Kevin Dumaresque
Kevin D. Dumaresque is president of KDD Consulting Inc. He has over 30 years of experience in finance, primarily in business advisory, financial reporting, acquisitions, and capital market transaction services across a wide range of entities, including local and multi-national engagements in the energy and resources, aerospace, real estate, mining, and communication industries in both the public and private sectors.

Mr. Dumaresque is currently chair of the advisory board of a local family-owned private company, a board member of Provident10, and a board member and committee chair (finance, risk and audit) of the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council. He has also served as president of the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants and as a board member of the Newfoundland Institute of Chartered Accountants.

A fellow of the institute Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (FCPA), Mr. Dumaresque holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from Memorial University. He also holds an ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

 Kendra MacDonald
Kendra MacDonald is the chief executive officer of Canada’s Ocean Supercluster. Ms. MacDonald was previously a partner in Deloitte’s risk advisory practice and the chief audit executive of Deloitte Global. She lived and worked in Ottawa, Montreal, Australia and Hong Kong prior to moving to St. John’s. She currently serves on the board of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Clean Resource Innovation Network as well as the executive for the Institute of Corporate Directors Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ms. MacDonald was previously chair of TechNL and Lupus Canada, Chair of the audit committee for BioCanRx and treasurer for Battle Harbour Historic Trust and the St. John’s Board of Trade. Ms. MacDonald is an FCPA, CFA, CIA, CISA, CRMA and holds her ICD.D designation.

Lynn Zurel
Lynn Zurel is a CPA, CA and holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors. As a CA, Ms. Zurel worked in public practice, primarily with Ernst & Young, and is currently employed as the chief financial officer of Stonebridge Capital Inc.

Ms. Zurel serves on the Muskrat Falls Oversight Committee for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and is a commissioner with the St. John’s Transportation Commission. She has had the privilege of serving, and continues to serve, in leadership roles on the boards of a wide variety of national, provincial and local not-for-profit organizations.

Ms. Zurel has also served on a variety of panels ranging from the Panel to Review the Audit Function for the City of St. John’s to serving as a panelist on numerous occasions focusing on women in business and philanthropy.
