As the world continues to battle a pandemic, a Newfoundland and Labrador company has developed several antimicrobial products that combat the spread of infectious diseases including COVID-19 with the support of the Provincial Government.

Polyamyna Nanotech, located in St. John’s, has created two general disinfectant products VANISHALL™ and MICRODOME™, and two unique antimicrobial products with residual activity, Microdome Plus and KeepKlear™. These innovative products are said to keep hard surfaces pathogen-free, including of superbugs, for a few hours to several months.

Co-founders Ramesh Kumar Mani and Bala Kishan Gorityala leaned on their previous work experience in nanomaterials and antibacterial drug discovery to develop these cutting-edge products. Taking a different approach in researching infectious bacteria, the pair targeted antimicrobial solutions instead of creating new antibiotics. This successful approach led to the development of two unique spray disinfectant products, KeepKlear™, which reportedly kills 99.9 per cent of bacteria, and Microdome Plus, which has been shown to protect a surface for up to four weeks. Both products are currently part of a pilot project being undertaken by Eastern Health.

During a demonstration of the products at a recent tour, Gorityala told the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology, that KeepKlear’s™ spray creates an invisible layer of protection for up to six months.

Support by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for research and development activity is key to the progress of emerging technologies. The Provincial Government contributed a non-repayable investment of $129,000 to Polyamyna Nanotech, as part of the company’s certification process for Health Canada and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Investments in our tech and innovation sector mean more jobs and a stronger economy for our province.

“It was awesome to meet Bala Kishan Gorityala while touring Genesis, and to discover the potential of the company’s unique products. Developed right here in our province, this company will transform the way we combat superbugs. Our government is proud to support a project that has the possibility to be a global game changer, one that tackles COVID-19 head on. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Polyamyna Nanotech.”
Honourable Andrew Parsons
Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology

“Existing antimicrobial solutions available in the market last for a couple of hours to days. Polyamyna’s KeepKlear™ antimicrobial coating not only kills 99.99 per cent of pathogens including human coronaviruses, but also keeps killing pathogenic germs for up to six months. We are very grateful to the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology for their invaluable grant contribution of $129,000, which enables us to conduct further validation, go through regulatory approvals and eventually bring this innovative product to the market as per the timelines.”
