Support from the Provincial Government was announced today for a unique tourism business providing high quality experiences to visitors on the Baccalieu Coastal Drive.

First established in 2011, Grates Cove Studios has evolved from a small art and design shop, to a distinctive product with a unique experience for visitors involving cuisine, high quality accommodations and experiential tourism packages incorporating hiking, arts and crafts. To assist the business with its marketing activities, the Provincial Government is contributing $25,835 from the Business Development Support (BDS) program.

This funding will support professional marketing services related to website development, as well as an expanded online presence. The business is focused on increasing awareness among potential visitors, including non-residents who will visit when it is safe to do so.

Owned and operated by Terrence and Courtney Howell, Grates Cove Studios features roofed accommodations, a full-service restaurant, workshops, guided hikes, and an open studio gallery featuring works by Terrence Howell and other local craftspeople and artisans.

The addition of more people and program-based experiences to existing infrastructure and activities is a development priority in the tourism industry. Support for these projects demonstrates a focus on small businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Funding from the Business Development Program is assisting Grates Cove Studios, a largely tourist-based business, to implement pivoting strategies that will help our locally owned business in outport Newfoundland to survive this pandemic and to emerge a stronger business with diversified streams of income. We will continue to welcome guests from our province and from all over the world here in Grates Cove. At the same time, our project implementations will help Grates Cove Studios engage with past, future and potential guests online. This partnership is at a key moment, as we start to enter a post pandemic world that has shifted how business is done. Thank you for this opportunity.”
