Geophysical Survey Underway on Burin Peninsula

December 29, 2021

Support from the Provincial Government is assisting with a high-resolution airborne geophysical survey being conducted over the Burin Peninsula. The geophysical results from the survey will be used to assist future bedrock geologic mapping initiatives of the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology’s Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador and to promote the mineral prospectivity of the region.

Production surveying began in late November and, weather permitting, could be completed before the end of the year. To assist with surveying, funding of $680,500 has been provided to cover the cost of work.

Sander Geophysics Ltd. is an airborne geophysical surveying company for petroleum and mineral exploration. Having operated on every continent, Sander Geophysics Ltd. recently signed a contract with the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology to conduct production surveying and recording from a fixed-wing aircraft for a large region of the Burin Peninsula and south-central Newfoundland.

The Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador is working to map the geological framework of the province, documenting geological resources and mineral deposits.

Budget 2021 included $2.5 million for mineral geoscience data collection and interpretation.

Quote
“This work will allow mineral exploration companies to better focus their efforts in an area where we are beginning to see the industry really flourish. Geophysical surveying can help further explain the distribution, nature, quantity and origin of the province’s mineral resources. The industry is booming. It’s been an exciting year for mineral exploration in Newfoundland and Labrador and I look forward to continuing to grow this critical industry.”

Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology
