The Ministerial Committee on Anti-Racism continues consultations to address racism in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ministers of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills; Justice and Public Safety; Indigenous Affairs and Reconciliation; and Education are meeting and consulting with community and cultural organizations, employers, educators, researchers, and others, to hear recommendations on addressing all forms of racism including; anti-Indigenous, anti-Black, and anti-Asian racism; anti-Semitism; and Islamophobia.

The public is also encouraged to participate through engageNL. Consultations will end on January 31, 2022.

Recognizing the systemic and persistent nature of racism, the Ministerial Committee on Anti-Racism is mandated to work towards a diverse, inclusive, and equitable society that is void of racism and discrimination. The committee is guided by the conviction that everyone has a right to dignity and respect, regardless of race, ancestry, ethnic origin, colour, citizenship, sex, gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, disability, or other grounds.

The committee holds firm to the following:

  • Discrimination in all its forms, including anti-Indigenous, anti-Black, and anti-Asian racism, anti-Semitism; and Islamophobia directly impact everyone;
  • Meaningful action begins with the acknowledgment of these realities; and
  • Listening to those with lived experiences, academia, community and cultural organizations as well as others will add to current learning and better equip the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador as it works on behalf of all its citizens to address racism in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Quote
“Our government remains deeply opposed to racism in any and all forms. As we move forward together as a province in addressing racism, we recognize it is essential to hear firsthand and seek solutions from those with direct experience.”
Honourable Gerry Byrne
Minister of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills
