January 28, 2021

The Provincial Government is encouraging residents to be cautious around coastlines in the coming days.

Environment Canada has advised that high waves, pounding surf and higher than normal water levels are expected to continue across the northeast and east coasts of Newfoundland through the remainder of the week. There is a chance of localized coastal flooding over the next few days, particularly over low-lying areas exposed to the north-northeast near high tides. The highest probability of flooding could occur near Saturday morning’s high tide. High swell waves may also extend to parts of the southwestern Avalon Peninsula and the eastern side of the Burin Peninsula this weekend.

Residents are asked to take steps to ensure their own personal safety. Residents should always have a basic emergency kit available and be prepared for at least 72 hours, with food, water, batteries, a portable radio, and prescription medications. Visit gov.nl.ca/beprepared for more information on emergency preparedness.

Municipalities and local service districts should monitor coastal infrastructure.

Regional forecast information is available from Environment Canada.
