March 18, 2021

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on an approaching weather system anticipated to affect parts of the province beginning tonight (Thursday, March 18) and continuing through Friday.

Environment Canada is warning of heavy rain across much of the island with up to 70 mm anticipated along parts of the south and northeast coasts. More than 25 cm of snow is forecast for central, western, and southern Newfoundland. The rain combined with mild temperatures could lead to significant snowmelt meaning localized flash freezing and flooding is likely.

Municipalities and local service districts should review their emergency management plans and ensure infrastructure such as roads, ditches and drains are clear.

Residents are asked to take steps to ensure their own personal safety. Homeowners should ensure sump pumps are in working order and consider moving important documents to higher ground. Visit www.gov.nl.ca/beprepared for more information on emergency preparedness.

Snow plows and ice control crews will be active during the weather event. Motorists are reminded to check NL 511 via the mobile app, nl511.ca or call 511 to check driving condition reports. One should never cross floodwaters on foot or in a vehicle as the water may be deeper than it looks.

We encourage residents to monitor the forecast for the most up-to-date information. Regional forecast information is available from Environment Canada.
