June 24, 2021

The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, provided an update today on preparations for the September 28 municipal elections. Public health guidelines have been distributed to municipalities on in-person voting and the safe operation of polling stations to ensure the health and safety of municipal staff and voters on election day.

Municipalities also have the option under the Municipal Elections Act to conduct mail-in voting or a combination of both mail-in and in-person voting. The Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs has been engaged with municipalities to provide information on these options. This includes in-person and virtual training sessions, information circulars, and daily communication with staff throughout the province providing advice and guidance.

Communities are reminded that applications and proposed regulations for mail-in voting must be submitted to the department by end of day Monday, July 5.

“Training and information activities for municipalities have been underway for some time and I am very pleased to see the high level of participation to date. Along with our partners at Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, we are working to ensure communities have the information and tools they need to conduct their elections safely, whether they choose in-person, mail-in, or a combination of both. Thank you to public health officials for their assistance in developing guidelines that will be of great assistance to municipalities.”
