Calling All Potential Candidates – Step Up and Make Your Mark on September 28

  • Municipal and Provincial Affairs

August 20, 2021

Today, the Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, the Honourable Pam Parsons, Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality, and Amy Coady-Davis, President of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, encouraged everyone with an interest in their communities to consider putting their name forward for election on September 28. Also joining the discussion were Laurabel Mba, social activist, and Mayor Tom Rose of Stephenville, member of the Qalipu First Nation.

Since the launch of the province-wide Make Your Mark campaign, ‘Your Voice, Your Community, Your Future’ on July 20, conversations about the importance of diversity, accessibility, and inclusion in municipal governance have been growing. These conversations are focusing on the need for diverse voices on councils that reflect the growing diversity of the province.

The discussion addressed ways that councils are working to be more inclusive and address barriers that may traditionally have prohibited people from seeking election, such as child care supports and accessibility accommodations.

Quotes
“It is very encouraging to see the great discussions that are happening, prompted by the ‘Your Voice, Your Community, Your Future’ campaign. Regardless of background, gender, age, or experience, we all have unique perspectives to share that can only have a positive impact on our communities and residents. I encourage everyone to become part of these conversations and to consider putting your name forward for election on September 28.”
Honourable Krista Lynn Howell
Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs

“Each community and each council is different. Municipal governments should be representative of our population. I encourage all women and gender diverse individuals to consider adding their name to the ballot to help ensure more inclusive discussions and decisions.”
Honourable Pam Parsons
Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality

“You are the people we are looking for. We need your voices and we need your experiences to ensure our councils are representative of the people who live, work and raise families in these communities. It’s so important that we have a full slate of candidates on the ballot to make sure that the residents of our communities have some great options and can choose freely when they cast their ballot.”
Amy Coady-Davis
President, Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador
