The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, is inviting input on proposed amendments to the provincial Coat of Arms Act. Newfoundland and Labrador has committed to amend the legal description of the Coat of Arms Act to add ‘Labrador’ and to remove the word ‘savages’.

Input on the proposed changes can be provided by responding to a short questionnaire available at engageNL. Changing the wording in the provincial Coat of Arms Act is part of the ongoing review of cultural symbols, observances and monuments.

The consultation will be open until Friday, September 17, 2021.

“Actions that respect the culture and heritage of Indigenous peoples are an important step on the path to Reconciliation. Our actions are focused on building inclusive communities. I look forward to receiving input through the consultation as we work to ensure the Coat of Arms more accurately reflects the peoples and cultures of the province.”
