The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, addressed delegates at the 2021 Tourism Excellence Awards Ceremony held on Tuesday, May 25, as part of Tourism Awareness Month.

Minister Crocker presented two awards during the event, the Cultural Tourism Award and the Tourism Achievement Award.

The Cultural Tourism Award is awarded to an individual or organization that recognizes and promotes the pursuit of cultural expression within the tourism industry. This year’s recipient was the French Rooms Cultural Centre and Bread Oven, located in Port au Choix. The French Rooms Cultural Centre and Bread Oven is a unique experience that promotes and advances culture in the community. The venue provides visitors with the opportunity to interact with people and experiences that celebrates the unique heritage in our province.

The Tourism Achievement Award recognizes a group or individual’s long-time achievement and dedication to the tourism industry. Deborah Bourden and Wilma Hartmann, owners of the Anchor Inn Hotel in Twillingate, received this year’s award. Aside from The Anchor Inn Hotel, Deborah and Wilma have established multiple accommodations with various amenities over the past 15 years.

Tourism is a vital economic driver in Newfoundland and Labrador. Prior to the pandemic, the industry generated over $1.14 billion in visitor spending, representing over 20,000 jobs and 2,800 businesses throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
