Work continues this summer to construct a new 102-bed adult mental health and addictions hospital and parking garage at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s.

The latest work on the 240,000 square foot, six-storey hospital includes the installation of underground water and sewer services as well as the construction of the concrete foundations. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates work to install the steel structure of the building to begin later this summer and for construction of the hospital to be completed in late 2024.

In addition, crews continue to construct the parking garage, which will include parking spaces for 1,000 vehicles and charging stations for electric vehicles, on the north-west corner of the Health Sciences Centre campus. The department anticipates construction of the garage to be completed this fall.

The new 60-bed hostel to replace the Agnes Cowan Hostel, which was demolished to allow for the construction of the mental health hospital, will be located on the top floor of the new building.

Avalon Healthcare Partnership was selected to design, build, finance and maintain the new adult mental health and addictions hospital in July 2020. Over the course of construction, more than 400 jobs are expected to be created. In June, 98 per cent of workers on site were from Newfoundland and Labrador.
