Public Advisory: Temporary Detour on Trans-Canada Highway on Avalon Peninsula

  • Transportation and Infrastructure

July 28, 2021

The Trans-Canada Highway will be closed on the Avalon Peninsula between Holyrood Access Road and Foxtrap Access Road for a culvert replacement, beginning 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 30. Work will occur during the daytime and overnight. The department anticipates the highway reopening on Monday, August 2. A contract valued at approximately $537,000 was awarded to Weir’s Construction to complete the work during this construction season.

As all four lanes will be required to be closed while work is ongoing, detours will be in place to ensure the work is completed as quickly and safely as possible:

Eastbound motorists can detour at:

  • Salmonier Line (Route 90);
  • Holyrood Access Road (Route 62); and
  • Witless Bay Line (Route 13).

Westbound traffic can detour at:

  • Foxtrap Access Road (Route 61); and
  • Witless Bay Line (Route 13).

When approaching the detours near the construction zone, motorists should travel at a reduced speed in either lane until they reach the merge point and then alternate into the open lane before cautiously travelling through the detour. Motorists should also refrain from moving from lane to lane to overtake other vehicles.

Signs and traffic control measures will be in place to direct travellers. Motorists are reminded to watch for crews directing traffic at the detours, pay attention to traffic control, and expect some traffic delays.

Eastbound motorists travelling to Butterpot Provincial Park will be permitted access to the Trans-Canada Highway beyond the detour, while westbound motorists will be required to travel through the detour to access the park due to the location of the construction area.

Other culverts were replaced on the Trans-Canada Highway near Avondale in 2019, and two separate locations near Salmonier Line in 2017 and 2020.

Additional details on this projects and other highway construction projects are available on www.nl511.ca and the NL 511 smartphone app.

Updates on progress will be provided as they become available.
