Minister Pam Parsons Provides Update on Daughters of the Vote

  • Office of Women and Gender Equality

December 1, 2021

The Honourable Pam Parsons, Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality, is proud to join Equal Voice NL as they work to re-brand the ‘Daughters of the Vote’ event that traditionally took place in November each year. The new yet-to-be-named event will be re-imagined to reflect and promote inclusion and diversity in politics.

‘Daughters of the Vote’ was created by Equal Voice so that young women – one from every provincial district – could have an opportunity to represent their community in the House of Assembly. Now participation will be open to women and gender-diverse individuals with a focus on inclusion and diversity to allow future leaders the chance to network with others, build relationships, and foster mentorship roles that will assist them in exploring their paths to boardroom tables, municipal councils and legislatures.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Equal Voice are committed to increasing inclusion and diversity in leadership roles of all types. More details on recruitment efforts will be released in the coming weeks.

Quotes
“In order for governments to make informed and meaningful decisions for the people in our communities, our province, and our country, it is important that our elected officials reflect the views and voices of all members of our society, especially those that have been traditionally underrepresented. I want to thank Equal Voice NL and all of our community partners for working to advance the representation of women and gender diverse individuals in leadership roles.”
Honourable Pam Parsons
Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equality

“Government policies and programming should reflect the true needs of our entire community; not just the elite few. The best way to ensure that is to have diverse representation at all decision-making tables. Equal Voice NL works tirelessly to support women and gender diverse individuals engaged in politics at any level, and understands that when it comes to feminism, we are not all on the same timeline. We look forward to working alongside community partners to evolve our current programming and commit to taking an intersectional approach to all decisions we make, moving forward.”
