2022 Paralympic Winter Games Begin Today in Beijing

The Provincial Government is wishing Newfoundland and Labrador’s Liam Hickey and all the Paralympians representing Canada the best of luck at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, which begin today in Beijing.

Hailing from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Liam Hickey is a member of the 2022 Canadian Paralympic Team for a second time representing Canada in Para ice hockey. In 2018, he made his debut at the Winter Paralympic Games, helping Canada win silver in Para ice hockey. Hickey is one of the rare athletes who has competed at both the Winter and Summer Paralympic Games.

Canada is participating in all five winter sports including:

  • Para ice hockey (17 athletes);
  • Para nordic ski – para biathlon and para cross country (12 athletes);
  • Para alpine skiing (11 athletes);
  • Wheelchair curling (5 athletes); and,
  • Para snowboard (4 athletes).

Forty-nine of Canada’s Paralympic athletes are ready to compete and will be joined by a large team of coaches and support staff in Beijing.
