January 20, 2022

While road conditions are different throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, motorists are reminded to prepare themselves and their vehicles for winter driving.

Motorists should ensure the following:

  • Ensure a vehicle’s windows, mirrors and roof are clear of snow and ice;
  • Ensure the vehicle is in good working order;
  • Check road and weather conditions before venturing out;
  • Driving speeds should be reduced, and remember to drive defensively;
  • Allow extra time for reaching your destination; and
  • Carry an emergency kit.

Under the province’s Highway Traffic Act, the use of studded tires is permitted from November 1 to April 30 each year, unless otherwise stated by the Minister of Digital Government and Service NL. For safety reasons, the use of winter tires is encouraged.

Motorists are also reminded that driving while distracted or under the influence of drugs and alcohol is illegal, and are encouraged to arrange for a safe and sober ride if planning to consume alcohol or cannabis. Suspected impaired or distracted driving should be reported to local authorities, because it is everyone’s responsibility to keep distracted and dangerous drivers off our province’s roads.
