The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Lewisporte Waste to Energy Project                                            (Reg. 2181)
Proponent: EnviroPower Renewable Development Inc.

The proponent is proposing to develop a waste to energy plant in Lewisporte that would convert biomass and plastic waste into renewable energy and ultra-low sulfur liquid and gas hydrocarbon fuels. The facility would be comprised of a gasification waste to energy combined heat and power (CHP) plant, and a hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) plant. The undertaking would include construction of the CHP and HTL plants, water treatment facility, sorting facility, tank farm, bulk cargo port and fuel jetty. The undertaking was registered on January 10, 2022; the deadline for public comment is February 16, 2022; and, the minister’s decision is due by February 24, 2022.

 

Terra Nova Quarry                                                                         (Reg. 2182)
Proponent: Mac- Court Holdings Inc.

The Proponent Mac Court Holdings Limited is proposing a 4.94 ha Quarry located 2 km east of the town of Terra Nova to produce blending sand products for use in the construction industry. The development will include vegetation clearing, grubbing and stockpiling of material on site. The operation will consist of extracting and screening and stockpiling material and is scheduled to begin in spring 2022. The undertaking was registered on January 12, 2022; the deadline for public comment is February 16, 2022; and, the minister’s decision is due by February 26, 2022.

AMENDMENT TO THE SUBMITTED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT:

Valentine Gold Project                                                                  (Reg. 2015)
Proponent: Marathon Gold Corp.

The proponent has revised and supplemented the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and EIS Amendment with the submission of a second EIS amendment (EIS Amendment 2). The EIS and Amendments 1 and 2 are to address the information requirements of the Environmental Protection Act and EIS guidelines that were issued to the proponent. The public is invited to review EIS Amendment 2, which can be found on the Department’s web page at https://www.gov.nl.ca/ecc/projects/project-2015/.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Lomond River Wiltondale Fishway Reconstruction                                                                    (Reg. 2176)
Proponent: Fisheries and Oceans Canada

The project was released subject to the following conditions:

  • The proponent is required to uphold all commitments made in the environmental assessment submission to mitigate the effects of the project on the environment.
  • The proponent is required to update the Environmental Assessment Division on the status of the project, including a copy of all permits, licences, certificates, approvals and other authorizations required for the project, one year from the date of this release letter and to provide additional updates if required.
