January 12, 2022

As part of the Education Action Plan, the Provincial Government is seeking input via engageNL to help inform a comprehensive review of the Teacher Training Act and associated Regulations. This review is an opportunity to modernize the Act and address challenges identified by the Premier’s Task Force on Improving Educational Outcomes.

The Department of Education is responsible for administering the Act, which governs the certification of teachers within the province as it relates to training, classification and professional standards. The Act identifies the roles and responsibilities of the Registrar of Teachers and the Teachers’ Certification Committee.

The Act sets out the regulations governing three crucial processes in teacher training:

  • Teacher Certification Regulations: The criteria that must be met for an individual to become certified to teach in the province;
  • Teacher Certification Appeals Regulations: The process that occurs if an individual disputes a decision made by the Registrar of Teachers or Teachers’ Certification Committee; and
  • Discipline: The Act provides for the suspension or cancelation of a certificate or licence where a teacher is guilty of gross misconduct, incompetence or for other just cause.

Input is invited from teachers, educators, administrators and other stakeholders. There are several ways to provide input and the deadline for submissions is February 11, 202:
