To support students in high school and junior high who are unable to attend classes due to illness or a requirement to self-isolate, the Department of Education and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) are adding additional educators to develop junior high curriculum resources, building on the existing rich repository of high school resources available through the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI).

High school students and their families are reminded that they can access online resources through CDLI to assist with self-directed learning. Learning resources and course review materials are available for over 40 high school courses in a range of curriculum areas, including mathematics, sciences, English and French languages, technology education, social studies, skilled trades, and fine arts. All high school students are encouraged to create an account at www.cdli.ca.

In addition to the existing learning resources, NLESD is in the process of hiring six additional educators to create online instructional resources to support numeracy and literacy for junior high students. It is anticipated that these educators will be in place in February, with instructional resources to follow.

CDLI was formed in 2001 with a mandate to develop and deliver senior high school distance education programming to students attending high schools in rural, remote and isolated regions of the province. Online resources are, however, available to all high school students and will be expanded to all junior high students.

CDLI also provides free access to course review materials in various courses, plus free, live online tutoring to students throughout the school year.

Quote
“As we have said from the beginning, the best place for students is in the classroom. With the resumption of in-person classes, we also need to support students who cannot attend in-person whenever possible. NLESD is well positioned to support high school and eventually junior high students in maintaining continuity of learning.”
Honourable Tom Osborne
Minister of Education

“Distance learning opens access to learning for many students in a variety of contexts. Adding resources to enhance intermediate literacy and numeracy content with multimedia resources for self-directed learning and self-assessment, is another step forward. While not intended for long-term at home learning or to replace curriculum, these resources will be a very useful tool to assist students who must miss in-class learning to continue their studies”
