The following statement was issued today by the Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador:

John Efford had a strength of personality and character that made him a force in our province, serving for decades as a proud Newfoundlander and Labradorian in provincial and federal governments.

For almost 20 years, John selflessly served his province and his country, first as the MHA for Port de Grave, then as the MP for Bonavista-Trinity-Conception and Avalon. As a provincial and federal cabinet minister, he was responsible for significant portfolios including Social Services, Fisheries, Rural Renewal and Natural Resources.

Without a doubt, John was one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most recognizable and colourful figures, inside and outside the political arena.

I am glad to have called John a friend and send condolences to his family and friends on behalf of the Provincial Government. Today, Newfoundland and Labrador has lost a true icon.

In remembrance of his passing, flags at all provincial government buildings will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset, until the day of John’s funeral.
