February 17, 2022

Today, Health Accord NL co-chairs Sister Elizabeth Davis and Dr. Pat Parfrey, released their final report to the Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services. The report contains 57 calls to action on improving specific social, economic, and environmental conditions affecting our health; providing better, more timely access to health care; and developing a more integrated, technologically enhanced, and sustainable health system. The report can be viewed online here. Printed copies will also be made available within the Newfoundland and Labrador public library system.

Health Accord NL was created in November 2020 to reimagine the health care system to best deliver services to people in communities across the province. It was mandated to deliver a 10-year Health Accord with short, medium, and long-term goals for a health care system that better meets the needs of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

The co-chairs, along with the six subcommittees, conducted public and targeted consultations on how health outcomes can be improved, as well as the social and economic factors that influence the health of residents of the province.

Residents, healthcare professionals, communities, community groups and other stakeholders will have every opportunity to provide input before any action is taken by government on these recommendations. The summary document is available in alternate formats and languages on www.gov.nl.ca/hcs.

Quotes
“I extend a sincere thank you to Sister Elizabeth and Dr. Parfrey and the rest of the dedicated Health Accord NL team, on behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, for the considerable work they undertook in preparing this significant report, as well as all those who shared their perspectives. We all know the health care system needs to change, as we continue to spend the most per capita yet have the worst outcomes. I look forward to reviewing this re-imagining of our health care system to take place over the next 10 years.”
Honourable Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“We recognize that our health care system is challenged to meet the needs of the people of the province, and that’s why Health Accord NL was established. We wanted them to describe the level of systemic changes that are required to improve health and health care. We asked them to re-imagine the system to address these needs in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. I thank the co-chairs and all the task force members for this valuable piece of work; we will now take the time to review their recommendations.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services
