In recognition of the fact that mental health and addictions are complex issues that impact many Canadians, the Council of the Federation in February announced an award for Innovation in Mental Health and Addictions Care. The one-time award for each province and territory is intended to recognize and support individuals and organizations who are excelling in this area and encourage innovation in others in the field.

The objective of the award is to highlight new ideas or methods in non-governmental, community, private and academic sectors, and Indigenous-led initiatives in the province. The recipient will receive $5,000 to advance the awarded initiative and foster further innovation, as well as a certificate signed by the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Applications and more information about the award are available here. The deadline to submit nominations for the award is May 2, 2022. Nomination packages can be submitted via email to TowardsRecovery@gov.nl.ca or through regular mail to:

Quotes
“Our government recognizes the importance of mental health, and we created a Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador which is making a real difference when it comes to accessing services and programs. The plan is people-centered, helps reduce stigma, and lets people know that help is there. There are some very innovative solutions that are having positive impacts on the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and this award is a means of recognizing those innovations.”
Honourable Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“Mental health and addictions has been a primary focus for our government, and we have worked toward the implementation of a considerable number of programs and supports. This award for innovation in the field will certainly help recognize those who are making significant contributions, while also increasing awareness of the topic.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services
