Nominations are now open for the Council of the Federation Literacy Award, presented annually by premiers from each province and territory to recognize outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy. The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2022.

The award recognizes individuals who have faced difficulties in life due to issues with reading or writing in English who have taken steps to improve these skills to prepare for post-secondary education and/or employment. The guidelines can be downloaded here.

The winner will be announced in the fall of 2022, with the Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, presenting the award to the recipient at a ceremony.

Quotes
“A literate province is a strong province. Our government recognizes the importance of literacy and we developed an Adult Literacy Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador which is making a real difference. I look forward to presenting this award to a determined person who has demonstrated a commitment to improving their life through literacy. This award recognizes the winner as an inspiration for all of us.”
Honourable Andrew Furey
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“Through the Adult Literacy Action Plan our government continues to support all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as they work to acquire the foundational skills that allow them to contribute to their homes, schools, communities and workplaces. I encourage adult learners to reflect on this past year and share their stories and learning experiences and apply for the Literacy Award.”
Honourable Tom Osborne
Minister of Education
