The following statement was issued by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills, following today’s meeting with the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada:

“I was very pleased to meet this morning with Minister Fraser. Top of mind was the developing crisis in Ukraine and the overwhelming expressed desire of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to support Canada’s efforts to help.

Minister Fraser extended congratulations on establishing the Ukrainian Family Support Desk, and how he could see this innovation serving as a model to be followed by other provinces.  I noted to Minister Fraser that this latest action builds upon Newfoundland and Labrador’s continuing response to assist refugees around the globe.

I advised Minister Fraser that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have always been there to provide a safe haven for those escaping the horrors of war and persecution, and the overwhelming response in this instance is very typical for us. Minister Fraser said he appreciates the strong wish of so many to assist, a sentiment I share. He asked for patience to all those wishing to help, as it may be some time before Ukrainians arrive here. Like so many before them, from many countries, they will be greeted with open arms.”
