The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, is recognizing the work and dedication of women in roles within municipal governments in Newfoundland and Labrador on International Women’s Day.

Women play a central role in various capacities in the day-to-day operations of municipalities in the province. They demonstrate leadership in sitting on municipal councils, committees, and in positions such as town clerks, managers and planners.

Through the Make Your Mark campaign, the Provincial Government worked with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador to raise awareness around the importance of engagement, diversity, accessibility and inclusion in municipal governance ahead of the 2021 municipal elections.

In 2021, a historic number of women put their names forward for election at all levels of government in the province. Additionally, during the municipal election process, the number of women elected increased by 12 per cent compared to 2017.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
