Today, the Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, provided an update on information sessions held for the new Municipal Conduct Act. Over 800 municipal councillors, administrators and staff registered for three virtual information sessions on the Municipal Conduct Act, demonstrating the need and importance of this new legislation.
The sessions, facilitated by the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, were an opportunity for municipalities to get detailed information on provisions under the Act, and to have questions answered. The Act governs conflict of interest, ethical behaviour and professional conduct for all municipalities, enabling them to establish their own codes of conduct to address issues such as conflicts of interest, and bullying and harassment in the workplace.
The sessions are a critical step in bringing the Municipal Conduct Act into force later this year.
Minister Howell is available to speak with media at 2:00 p.m. today (Friday, March 18) in the main lobby of East Block, Confederation Building.
Quote
“Municipal governance took a significant step forward just this past fall with the introduction of the new Municipal Conduct Act. I thank all municipal mayors, councillors and administrators for their interest and participation in the information sessions. The dedicated staff in the department are working diligently to finalize regulations and prepare templates and materials to help municipalities in the development of their own codes of conduct.”
