Newfoundland and Labrador will once again be featured on the national television scene tonight with the premiere of ‘Son Of A Critch’ on CBC and CBC Gem. Based on Mark Critch’s award-winning, best-selling memoir, ‘Son Of A Critch: A Childish Newfoundland Memoir,’ the series airs at 9:00 p.m. NST, 8:30 p.m. in most parts of Labrador.

Son Of A Critch was filmed on location in Newfoundland and Labrador throughout the communities of St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, and Portugal Cove. It is an inter-provincial co-production between Project 10 Productions Incorporated and Newfoundland and Labrador-based Take the Shot Productions, in association with CBC and Lionsgate Television.

Mark Critch stars in the series along with many other notable performers, including Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Malcolm McDowell, Claire Rankin, Sophia Powers, and Mark Rivera. The production employed approximately 273 cast and crew, 207 of whom were Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Budget 2021 included an additional $6 million for Newfoundland and Labrador’s film sector, making a total of $10 million available for equity for film and television productions. In 2020-21, production activity in Newfoundland and Labrador was over $50 million, supporting almost 500 full-time equivalent positions.

Quotes
“Congratulations to the cast and crew on tonight’s premiere. I’ll be just one of many tuning in. There is no doubt that this television series will be a success, following in the footsteps of others like Republic of Doyle and Hudson and Rex. Our province has something special to offer the television and film industry – our talent and people, the beauty of our natural environment, and our unique culture. It draws in audiences from across the country and around the world. I think we can all agree as well that the comedic genius that is ‘Son Of A Critch’ is something that we all need right now.”
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation
