Provincial Government Announces New Appointments and Reappointments to the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre Board of Directors

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, today announced three new appointments and nine reappointments to the Board of Directors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre.

Laura Pottle-Hayley, Gary Martin and Colin Sullivan have each been newly appointed for a three-year term.

Tom Godden, Dr. Noel Browne, Dennis Clarke, Tanya Haywood, Andrew Bruce, Roger Head, Winston Jenkins, Sheena McCrate and the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation (or designate) have each been reappointed for a three-year term.

These new appointments and reappointments were recommended through the merit-based Independent Appointments Commission.

Biographical Information for New Appointments and Reappointments

New Appointments

Laura Pottle-Hayley
Laura Pottle-Hayley is currently the provincial K-3 teacher for ConnectED Remote Learning in Newfoundland and Labrador. Ms. Pottle-Hayley has a Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Special Education and a Masters in Educational Leadership. She is the coaches chair for Newfoundland and Labrador Artistic Swimming and a director on the Board of Directors with Sport NL. Laura is a NCCP Master Coach Developer and Evaluator with Coaching NL and Canada Artistic Swimming.

Gary Martin
Gary Martin has worked with the RCMP “B” Division for the past 30 years and is currently a property manager. Mr. Martin holds a Certificate in Purchasing Management from Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Purchasing Management Association Canada (PMAC). He has an extensive history with hockey in this province, is Chef de Mission for Team NL for the 2022 Canada Summer Games and is a tireless volunteer with various groups in Mount Pearl.

Colin Sullivan
Colin Sullivan is a lawyer and CPA with Sullivan Law and Tax. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-Op) from Memorial University and a Bachelor of Legal Laws from the University of New Brunswick. Mr. Sullivan is on the board of directors for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Newfoundland and Labrador Rugby Union, and volunteers with the St. John’s Caps Under 9 hockey program.

Reappointments

Tom Godden
Tom Godden is retired after a long career in in both the sport and recreation and occupational health and safety fields. He holds a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University. Mr. Godden is a former Board member and President of Sport NL and has participated in a number of Canada Games in various roles with Team Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Godden has been appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Directors for the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre Inc.

Dr. Noel Browne
Dr. Noel Browne came to St. John’s from Ireland in the late 1960s to start his medical career. Dr. Browne is one of the founding fathers of rugby in Newfoundland and Labrador and has been heavily involved in both participating in the sport as an athlete and developing a rugby community and culture in the province. In 2016, Dr. Browne was invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. Dr. Browne has been a board member with the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre since 2011.

Dennis Clarke
Dennis Clarke is a partner at Goodland Buckingham Barristers and Solicitors. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University, a LLB from University of New Brunswick and a Master of Laws from University of Washington. Mr. Clarke is Chair of the Board of C-Core and is a board member of Aurion Resources Ltd, Swilers RFC and Rainbow Riders.

Tanya Haywood
Tanya Haywood is the Deputy City Manager (Community Services) with the City of St. John’s and holds a Bachelor of Physical Education, Bachelor of Education and a Master of Recreation, all with Memorial University of Newfoundland. Ms. Haywood has over 35 years volunteer experience in coaching/managing sports teams, leading parent sports committees and was a mission staff member with Team NL at the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Ms. Haywood is also a member of STEP St. John’s, an organization that works to advance the city of St. John’s metro area as a premier sport tourism destination.

Andrew Bruce
Andrew Bruce is Director of Licensing and Regulatory Administration with the Newfoundland Labrador Liquor Corporation. Mr. Bruce holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business Administration from Memorial University.

Roger Head
Roger Head is a Computer Programmer Analyst with the Office of the Chief Information Officer and has a diploma in computer studies from Keyin College and a Bachelor of Science (Math) from MUN. Mr. Head is also Vice-President with the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association, has volunteered with NL Wheel Chair Basketball and is a board member with the Coalition of Persons with Disabilities Newfoundland and Labrador.

Winston Jenkins
Winston Jenkins spent his career at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as a Multi-Programs Specialist. He has an extensive volunteer history as a member of the Atlantic Diversity Council with CFIA and a National Member of Human Rights Council with PSAC. He also served eight years on the National Persons with Disabilities Board with CFIA. In the community, Mr. Jenkins spent 45 years coaching basketball and softball at the high school level and 20 years with the Twillingate Recreation Committee.

Sheena McCrate
In her role as Chief Executive Officer with St. John’s Sports and Entertainment Ltd., Sheena McCrate was responsible for the major corporate and strategic decisions of the organization. During her 14-year tenure with SJSEL, she was responsible for attracting and executing numerous world-class concerts and events including JUNOS 2010 and the 2017 Tim Hortons Brier.  Ms. McCrate holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University and an MSc International Marketing from the University of Strathclyde. She holds multiple Board director positions including Sport Tourism Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union, and Downtown St. John’s.
