With construction of the two new 60-bed long-term care homes in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor almost complete, Central Health is beginning clinical orientation of its staff and will start moving patients into the facilities in mid to late April.

Final identified issues are being addressed in the coming days and all associated costs have been at the expense of NL Healthcare Partners. Furthermore, the department has been withholding monthly service payments to the design-build partner due to the homes not being available for use.

More details on the partnership can be found online here.

Construction began on the two identical 6,195 m2 (66,685 square feet) buildings in 2019. Each building has 60 resident rooms, outdoor therapy space, intergenerational play areas and accessible wandering paths.

In addition, each building has a hospitality suite for family members of residents that are in palliative care, a salon, a family celebration room, a multi-purpose room, and a spiritual room.

The contract with NL Healthcare Partners to design, build, finance and maintain the two buildings is worth approximately $112 million (net present value), and covers a 30-year period.

The opening of the homes will result in 120 new long-term care beds in the province, in addition to the 20 new protective care beds that opened in Botwood in 2021, and 145 beds that opened in Corner Brook in 2020.

The new homes are part of approximately $1.4 billion in active infrastructure projects in Newfoundland and Labrador, including:

  • Six new mental health and addictions beds at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay;
  • 18 new beds at the Labrador Correctional Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay;
  • 102 beds at a new adult mental health and addiction facility in St. John’s; and
  • 164 beds at a new hospital in Corner Brook.

Quotes
“Due diligence is being done and this extra work has not been costing taxpayers any additional money because of the strength of the P3 contract. These new homes are providing 120 new long-term care beds in the region. Along with 20 new beds in Botwood and 145 new beds in Corner Brook, we are happy to be improving access to long-term care needs in this province.”
Honourable Elvis Loveless
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure

“Our province has a rapidly aging population which, in turn, means we have an increased need for this type of long-term care accommodations. I am very pleased to see the work drawing to completion, with a goal of moving residents into their new home this spring. These homes, with a hospitality suite for family members, a family celebration room, along with multi- purpose and spiritual rooms, will provide beautiful spaces for residents to enjoy with their loved ones.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services
