The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills, will sign a proclamation tomorrow (Tuesday, May 9) to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism.

The signing will take place at the Media Centre, East Block, Confederation Building at 12:30 p.m. Minister Byrne will be joined by representatives of the Jewish community.

Through the Ministerial Committee on Anti-Racism, a request was made to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador from local Jewish communities on an approach that is also advocated by the League for Human Rights, B’nai Brith Canada. This definition of anti-Semitism is being adopted along with a pledge to continue the dialogue on anti-Semitism and to continue to demonstrate support for the Jewish community.

The Provincial Government formed the Ministerial Committee on Anti-Racism in 2021, with a mandate to eradicate racism in all its forms, including the recent rise of anti-Semitism. Since then, the committee has taken actions on multiple fronts and this work is ongoing.
