In an effort to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of policing services, the Honourable John Hogan, KC, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, today announced that the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is expanding its jurisdiction in western Newfoundland.

The expanded jurisdiction will include the communities in the Bay of Islands, the Town of Massey Drive, and communities in the Humber Valley as far east as Pasadena. In total, nearly 33,000 residents in the region will be served by the RNC’s 24-hour policing model.

The transition will occur over the next year, with an effective date to be finalized in the coming months. The Provincial Government continues to work with the RNC, RCMP, and communities to ensure policing is working in the most effective and efficient way possible to ensure all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians feel safe and secure.

Until further notice, residents are advised to continue to contact their local police detachment. In the event of an emergency, always call 911.

Quotes
“Our two policing agencies, the RCMP and the RNC, play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of residents throughout our province. I have no doubt that RNC will rise to the occasion, to continue to build safe and healthy communities. I am also grateful for the continued contribution of the RCMP to public safety in our province and in our west coast region where specialized services will continue to be provided from the RCMP’s Corner Brook detachment. Public trust and community co-operation are crucial in effective law enforcement and I am pleased we are able to move forward with this transition.”

“This is an exciting time for the RNC and communities in the Bay of Islands, the Town of Massey Drive, and the Humber Valley including Pasadena. We have worked hard to build relationships and develop a policing standard in this region that the community can rely on. The RNC is eager to commence the transition and looks very much forward to enhancing policing services to all our residents.”
Chief Patrick R. Roche

“As a government, we have put an emphasis on working with police and community partners to ensure we are living and raising our families in one of the safest provinces in the country. I thank Minister Hogan for listening to our municipal leaders and area residents by expanding the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary jurisdiction in western Newfoundland. This announcement is a reflection of what can be accomplished by working together.”
Scott Reid
MHA for St. George’s – Humber

“Pasadena is a growing and evolving town and it’s important that our policing services also grow and evolve with us. As a council, we are continually reviewing the services in our town to ensure we are doing the most we can with the resources we have available to us for the maximum benefit of our residents. The expansion of the RNC’s policing area to include the Town of Pasadena is an excellent example of how cooperation between levels of government can do just that and I thank Minister Hogan, Chief Roche and our MHA Scott Reid for their personal attention and involvement to bring this to fruition. On behalf of the town, I would like to welcome Chief Roche and his members to Pasadena and we are delighted and proud to include the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary as part of our community.”
