The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, is extending congratulations to Kevin Blackmore of Glovertown, Wayne Chaulk of Charlottetown (Bonavista Bay) and Ray Johnson of Carbonear on their appointments as Members of the Order of Canada.

Blackmore, Chaulk and Johnson were recognized for their contributions to Canadian music and comedy as ambassadors of Newfoundland and Labrador’s culture and heritage, and were among 99 recipients named to the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, on December 29, 2022.

The musical comedy trio, known as Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, was formed in 1983 after an impromptu first performance at a high school assembly in Glovertown.

They went on to entertain audiences throughout Canada with their unique brand of sketch comedy, combined with traditional and original music for nearly 40 years. Their body of work includes iconic originals like “Saltwater Joys,” which pays homage to the quiet comforts of rural life, as well as their popular interpretations of traditional favourites like “Sarah” and “By The Glow of the Kerosene Light”.

On the lighter side, offerings such as “Gotta Get Me Moose, B’y” and “Salt Beef Junkie” provide a comedic take on Newfoundland and Labrador culture that endears them to locals and fans across Canada.

Blackmore, Chaulk and Johnson will receive their Order of Canada insignia at an investiture ceremony in Ottawa later this year.

Quote
“Kevin Blackmore and Wayne Chaulk, along with Ray Johnson who hails from my district of Carbonear-Trinity-Bay de Verde, capture the very essence of Newfoundland and Labrador culture every time they take to the stage as Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers. They are an integral part of our province’s arts and cultural community, and I am proud to congratulate them on this incredibly well-deserved honour.”
