September 18, 2023

Health care providers in Newfoundland and Labrador now have a convenient resource at their fingertips to help individuals achieve their well-being goals around physical activity.

The Health Care Providers’ Physical Activity Kit is a readily available source of tools and information, designed to empower and equip health care providers to have meaningful conversations with patients and clients about physical activity and to foster a holistic approach to health and well-being.

The toolkit provides digital resources, tools and information to frontline health care providers to make it easy for health care providers to find recommendations for incorporating physical activity into their clients’ daily lives.

Toolkit resources include:

  • A sleep and physical activity journal;
  • Exercise routines for beginner, intermediate or advanced physical activity levels;
  • A physical activity ‘prescription and referral pad’ for health care providers to prescribe ways to increase physical activity, reduce sedentary behaviour and/or improve sleep; and
  • Additional resources including posters and videos for office waiting rooms and a variety of other support materials, such as the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines.

Toolkit resources were developed in part based on the results of a survey that was conducted with health care providers in the province. This toolkit is the result of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation’s annual partnership with ParticipACTION, and is the first of its kind in Canada.

The toolkit was developed with input from the Department of Health and Community Services, Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services, the Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Health and Social Development and Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador.

Quotes
“Physical activity is an essential component of our well-being. The Health Care Providers’ Physical Activity Kit puts a variety of resources together in one place to give health professionals easy access to information they can use to encourage their patients or clients to begin incorporating physical activity into their daily routines. A little movement goes a long way, and this kit shows us that the pathway to overall well-being is achievable with a small effort for people of all ages and abilities.”
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation

“Well-being is more than physical health, it also includes mental, social, financial, and environmental well-being. Healthy living is influenced by personal choices, but more strongly influenced by the social factors in which people live. Incorporating such conversations about well-being into health care is a step forward in changing how we think about our health.”
Dr. Pat Parfrey
Deputy Minister of Health Transformation

“As a health care provider, I believe the Physical Activity Kit provides exceptional knowledge, resources and tools to help me and other providers in supporting clients in improving their physical activity level, based on their specific needs. Physical activity offers a variety of physical, mental and social health benefits, making it so valuable for enhanced well-being. The kit can assist health care providers in all disciplines with the prevention and management of chronic health conditions, enhanced balance and coordination and improved overall health.”
