Provincial Government Recognizes Concussion Awareness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador

September 27, 2023

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, has proclaimed September 24 to September 30, 2023 as Concussion Awareness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. Further, today is Atlantic Concussion Awareness Day, which is recognized across the Atlantic provinces in a collaborative approach to awareness activities.

Concussion Awareness Week is recognized to encourage involvement in preventing, recognizing and managing concussion in sport.

Concussions are a serious public health issue affecting all Canadians. Early recognition of concussions, proper medical assessment, and appropriate management can make a difference in recovery. All residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are encouraged to learn how to prevent concussions in sport, how to care for one, and where to find evidenced-based information about prevention and recovery from concussion.

The Sixth International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport, released in June 2023, summarizes the latest research on concussions and can be used to inform optimal concussion protocols for your sport. Updates to this research are available at the Sport Information Resource Centre.

Additional information and resources are also available on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador website.

“Concussions continue to be a significant health concern for athletes participating in sport at any level. I encourage athletes, coaches, parents and volunteers to learn more about how to prevent, detect and manage concussion symptoms, so participants can continue to be active while engaging in a safe sport experience.”
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation
