Provincial Government Announces Appointment to Board of Regents at Memorial University

The Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Education, today announced the three-year appointment of Rex Gibbons to the Memorial University Board of Regents.

The Board of Regents, along with Memorial University’s Senate, is responsible for all operational matters of the institution including programming, qualifications of employees, and other matters deemed to be in the best interest of the institution. The Board of Regents consists of individuals with a diverse range of knowledge and expertise.

The Provincial Government continues to support Memorial University as it moves through the implementation process of recommendations from the Auditor General’s report.

Biography

Rex Gibbons

Rex Gibbons is an experienced businessperson, and has held positions such as the Executive Vice-President and Board Member with the Jacques Whiteford Group of Companies. Mr. Gibbons has served as a member of the Board of Regents previously, a former Member of the House of Assembly for St. John’s West, and Minister of Mines and Energy and Natural Resources in the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. He has been an active volunteer throughout his career with several community organizations. Mr. Gibbons holds a PhD in geology from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), undergraduate degrees in education, math and geology, and a Masters in Science in geology from Memorial University.
